"Thanks for a great book.  Most e-books are small, almost pamphlets but the Desktop Search Handbook is great value for over 60 pages of info"    - Greg H, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Welcome!

Thanks for buying the Office Extras Handbook – our latest e-book.

The products in this book are, for the most part, tools that members of the Office Watch team use themselves. They are often the ones that we know and are used in the making of our newsletters, e-books and other work.

The resulting list is eclectic and goes beyond the products that you'd normally think of as ‘Office add-ins’.  They include programs that we feel are useful for system maintenance and performance improvement since overall computer health directly impacts on your use of Office.

Our articles on each product aim to tell you what we like about that product and how it can benefit Office users. Where possible we've given you practical tips and advice on how we get the most out of the product.  For a more detailed list of features on each product you can check out the manufacturers web site using the web link provided.

Sometimes there’s more than one product to do the same job because each of us has different needs and preferences.

We’ve broken up our selections into categories:

Access

Extras for Microsoft Access

Excel

Add-ins for Microsoft Excel

General

Some essential tools for any Office user, including a better FTP than in Frontpage, a better dictionary than in Word, a clearer display on your monitor, a better calculator than in Windows, simple automation of Windows and Office, plus how and why we take it in our pocket wherever we go.

Hardware

Our favorite keyboard, calculator and removable storage.

Imaging

Useful utilities for viewing and managing your photos.

Outlook

Extras for Microsoft Outlook plus the essential add-in for any Outlook developer.

System Information

Simple but comprehensive ways to get details about your computer, software, hardware, plus the product keys that activate software like MS Office.

System Protection

If you want your computer to run efficiently then you need to protect against spyware and other nasties – this chapter has the guardian software we prefer.

Text Editors

Sometimes you need something better than Notepad but not a cumbersome as Word – we recommend some great text editors for editing web pages, XML and code.

Time and Date

How to display a calendar and time across different time zones in a quick and unobtrusive fashion.

Free Updates

Like the Desktop Search Handbook, the Office Extras Handbook takes advantage of the flexibility in e-books.  We will expand and update this e-book over the coming months.

All buyers of this e-book get FREE updates until 30 June 2006.

You get the updated e-book the same way you received the edition you’re reading now – details below.

Since this is an Adobe Acrobat book you can navigate using the bookmarks pane on the left to jump around the Office Extras Handbook.

Discounts for Readers

Some companies have made special offers to buyers of the Office Extras Handbook - if you choose to buy their product, save yourself a few dollars by taking advantage of the exclusive offer in these pages.

The offers are made by the companies themselves not by us.

Editorial independence is something we've always taken very seriously here at Office Watch.  We do our best to keep the content of our newsletters and ebooks separate from advertising and other commercial considerations.

We did not choose products on the basis of the discount made to our readers.  The selection of products was made independently then companies were approached about the possibility of a discount offer to readers.  The companies paid nothing to us for inclusion in the e-book nor for the right to offer a discount to readers. We could have charged for these things (many other publications do that) but we feel that would compromise our editorial independence.
